Fund Change Online

This product allows financial advisors (fiduciary person who manages retirement plans) to make changes to investment fund line-up that are offered to their employees.

Existing function only allowed one-to-one change. Due to company-wide migration of investment portfolio services, a rapid many-to-many changes were in need.

When I took over the project from another designer, I had throw the old design out, as the proposal was designed around functionality and not the optimal experience.

Dusting off the old design

Previous design

Previous design

Previous design combined fund selection and change entries in single step. Pagination could potentially cause hesitation for users who may fear losing selection by going to the next page.

Revised design

Revised design

Revised design separates the selection and change entries into a separate steps. This allows the user to focus on one task at a time. Pagination has been replaced with continuous scroll.

Previous design

Previous design

Previous design required entry even if the user was trying keep the same fund. Repeated ‘Advanced search’ buttons creates a visual clutter. Description on the top right of table is very ambiguous.

Working with the developer, I was able to embed a pre-fill if the same fund was available - eliminating the need to re-enter the same information. Based on the user feedback, advanced search is an infrequent activity, which therefore did not require a repeated presence. Financial advisors are well-versed in this topic and the biggest need of this function was rapid entry.

Previous design

Previous design buries a required step within the confirmation screen.

Revised design

Revised design

Again, in the revised design, a required step is broken off as a separate step, so that a federally required step is not missed.

Upon completion of change entries, review screen gives a clear view of which funds are being replaced with which, as well as unchanged funds.

The very last screen gives the user the full list of the fund line-up, with indicators for pending changes.
